Markets

Interactive tools, notes, and exercises on supply and demand, equilibrium, and the welfare consequences of policy.

Interactive tools

6 tools
Tool 01
Supply & demand — curve shifts
Explore how changes in income, substitute prices, input costs, technology, and other factors shift demand and supply curves, and trace the effect on equilibrium price and quantity.
Tool 02
Competitive equilibrium & surplus
Set the parameters of linear inverse demand P = a − bQ and supply P = c + dQ. See the equilibrium, and the consumer and producer surplus triangles, update in real time.
Tool 03
Price controls
Impose a price ceiling or floor and set the control price with a slider. See whether it binds, how much excess demand or excess supply it creates, and how consumer surplus, producer surplus, and deadweight loss shift relative to the free-market equilibrium.
Tool 04
Tax incidence
Apply a per-unit tax and see why the statutory side doesn't matter: identical prices and quantity whichever curve shifts. Watch the consumer/producer burden split track the slopes, alongside revenue and deadweight loss.
Tool 05
Trade, tariffs & export taxes
Open a closed economy to the world market: set the world price above or below the autarky price to make the country an exporter or importer, then impose an export tax or import tariff and watch surplus, trade volume, government revenue, and deadweight loss respond.
Tool 06
Perfect substitutes & complements
Choose perfect substitutes or perfect complements, set the preference parameter k along with prices and income, and watch the optimal bundle settle at a corner, spread along the whole budget line at the knife-edge price ratio, or sit at the kink of an L-shaped indifference curve.
